Building Comprehension: Making Inferences in Fiction Texts

  • Author: Eduscape
  • Course Level: 101
  • Est. Length: 30 minutes
  • Grade(s): 6-8th Grade
COURSE DESCRIPTION
As middle schoolers encounter more complex fiction texts, they must apply inferential thinking to make deeper connections. Making inferences involves reading closely, reading between the lines, and citing evidence. We will build a toolkit of teacher moves that build investigative readers who approach text with reflection and self-monitoring. In this mini course, we will examine strategies to support your 6th-8th grade learners in making logical inferences and citing evidence to support their opinions. With the examined strategies, we will choose a mentor text and create a plan for modeling and practicing inferring.
